Our goal is to open the doors of this place to the whole world to learn how to take care of it together, to empower visitors who come to Bahia Cupica to join the cause with joy and dynamism while enjoying the Observatory and all of its magic.

Our facilities have an eco-sustainable occupancy capacity of 30 people simultaneously, in order to achieve a balance with the local fauna and flora. Come and see it for yourself!

About Us

We are the Pacific Ocean Observatory - Origins Eco Refuge, a place where you can appreciate the fauna and flora of the Equatorial Humid Zone of the Colombian Chocó in all its splendor.

Where is Orígenes Eco Refugio?

In the Chocó region on the shores of the Colombian Pacific Ocean, one hour by boat from Bahía Solano, in Bahía Cupica, exactly on Majagual beach.

How do you get to Orígenes Eco Refugio?

  • From Medellín, take the direct flight to Bahía Solano, guests can choose between the airlines: Satena, Pacifica, San Germán and EasyFly according to the schedules and available rates.

  • From Bogotá, take a direct flight to Bahîa Solano, on the airline of your choice: Satena, San Germán and EasyFly, according to available schedules and fares.

  • From other parts of the country, it is recommended to make a stopover in Medellín or Bogotá.

  • For groups of 4 to 5 people, Orígenes Eco Refugio can coordinate a charter flight from Olaya Herrera airport directly to Bahia Cupica, round trip on Mondays and Fridays, with 20 days advance notice for pricing and scheduling.

  • To get to Bahía Cupica, guests must take a motorcycle taxi from the Bahía Solano airport exit to the port, it costs $7,500 per person.

  • In the port of Bahía Solano you must take a boat to Bahía Cupica between 12 noon and 1:00 pm to get to the hotel, the cost is $70,000 per person/way. (Sundays and holidays there is no boat service and there is only one boat per day)

  • The return boat from Bahía Cupica to Bahía Solano leaves at 6:00 am and costs $70,000 person/way. (Sundays and holidays there is no boat service and there is only one boat per day).

  • In case the number of guests per trip is 5 people or more, the hotel's boat will provide the round trip transportation service. Value per person/trip is $70,000, in more flexible hours.

Do I have to pay an airport tax?

Yes: Upon arrival at the Bahía Solano airport, a tax of $30,000 is charged that must be assumed by each guest.

Upon leaving Bahía Solano they must pay a Bahía Solano departure tax of $7,500.

Should I get vaccinated before traveling?

Yes, it is recommended that you:

Have the complete COVID vaccination schedule.

Get vaccinated two weeks in advance against yellow fever and tetanus.

What is included with my stay?

  • Lodging for the contracted days.

  • A basic menu with catch of the day is offered.

  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack.

  • A daily activity to choose between: night campfire, bird watching walk, ecological trail walk, egg preservation activity and/or turtle release.

  • Hotel insurance.

How do you process payments?

  • As we can only accommodate a maximum of 30 people to maintain the local ecological balance, we take requests directly through our Whatsapp or email accounts.

  • Once you're ready to book your stay, we'll ask for a deposit based on your plan, we will arrange your transportation to Origenes and send you a confirmation email.

  • We currently accept direct payments and may offer other options like PayPal in the future. We'd love to hear your opinion!

What other means of transportation can I use to get to Orígenes Eco Refugio?

You can take a boat in Buenaventura that will take you to the port of Bahía Solano (duration 24 hours) and from there take the boat to Bahía Cupica.

Can you go by land to Orígenes Eco Refugio?

It is not possible to arrive by land.

How's the weather?

The Colombian Pacific is one of the rainiest regions in the world, it has an average temperature of 28 degrees and the average rainfall in the month is 18 days, for this reason it is called tropical humid monsoon climate, so be prepared!

What type of clothing should I wear?

Bring a windbreaker or light rain jacket, comfortable closed shoes for walking, long-sleeved shirts, a hat, and light long pants.

For days at the beach, sea excursions and sun, bathing suit and the swimming items that you like the most.

Do not wear items for the exclusive use of the armed forces (camouflaged clothing).

Can we have access to a la carte food?

Yes: Special dishes are offered such as lobster, crab teeth, crab, octopus, whole snapper and whole saw, according to the catch of the day and value according to weight.

Food for vegans, celiacs, frutiverians, vegetarians, etc., must be informed 8 days in advance of the trip for their quote and planning.

Liquors such as Rum, Aguardiente and Whiskey are offered (See price table at the hotel)

Picadas or food are offered by request according to season. Whiskey (See price table at the hotel)

Is it possible to get food for Vegans, Vegetarians, Celiacs, etc?

Yes: Food for vegans, celiacs, frutiverians, vegetarians, etc., must be informed 8 days in advance of the trip for its quote and planning.

In case you like to consume special or diet foods between meals (almonds, sugar-free chocolates, dried seeds or dehydrated fruits, for example), which you will not be able to get in the town stores, we recommend you take them with you.

What other activities and services can we access for an additional value?

2-hour boat trips to watch whales, dolphins, manta rays, birds, practice masking, fishing, visit beaches or indigenous reservation, walks on the river or sea.

River excursions for groups of 5 people or more: $60,000 per person

Excursions in the SEA for groups of 5 people or more: $100,000 per person

Excursions by SEA or RIVER groups less than 5 people $130,000 per person.

What health and safety precautions should I take into account?

  • Have the complete COVID vaccination schedule.

  • Get vaccinated two weeks in advance against yellow fever and tetanus.

  • Carry in your personal medicine cabinet: topical antibiotic ointment, dressings, povidone-iodine, antiseptic towels, thermometer, acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen, and the prescription medications you take regularly.

  • Carry flashlight and whistle at all times.

  • Refrain from drinking alcohol in excess.

  • Do not carry valuables.

  • Do not bring single-use plastic bags, cans or plastic containers to the hotel, if you bring them you must take them back to your home.

  • Permanently use “ocean-friendly” sunscreen. A well-known trademark is Nivea Sun with this label.

  • Permanently use repellent (aerosols are not allowed).

  • Bring a thermos or bottle to drink water, at the hotel you will be supplied with drinking water to keep you hydrated.

  • Avoid playing music at high volume.

  • The consumption of alcohol is not allowed while the excursions are carried out by boat or on horseback.

  • Follow the safety instructions of the hotel staff at all times.

What does hotel insurance cover?

  • Medical assistance for accident, illness, outpatient medications.

  • Dental expenses due to accident.

  • Medical transfers by accident.

  • Transfer and stay of companion, by accident or accidental death.

Where is the nearest health post?

The closest health center is in the town of Cupica, where basic emergency services are provided.

The closest hospital is in Bahía Solano.

Are pets allowed?

Yes, under the responsibility of the owners who must ensure the safety and good behavior of their pet, they will also be responsible for bringing the food they consume.

Do I have to know how to swim in order to travel?

It is not a requirement, but you must use life jackets whenever you go out to the river or the sea and do not take them off at any time. This will be supplied by the hotel.

Is the entry of minors or disabled people allowed?

Yes, as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult who complies with and enforces the hotel's safety recommendations, except for people with restricted mobility, since at this time we do not have the infrastructure to guarantee their safety and comfort.
