What you'll want to do at Origenes

Our goal is to open the doors of this place to the whole world to learn how to take care of it together, to empower visitors who come to Bahia Cupica to join the cause with joy and dynamism while enjoying the Observatory and all of its magic.

Our facilities have an eco-sustainable occupancy capacity of 30 people simultaneously, in order to achieve a balance with the local fauna and flora. Come and see it for yourself!

WHALE WATCHING AND MARINE EXPEDITION

This activity is planned for the months of July to October of each year when the Humpback or Yubarta whales travel 8,500 kilometers from Antarctica to reproduce and give birth to their calves in Colombian waters.

We will sail towards the unexpected, with luck, and only if the Yubartas wish, will they show themselves and delight us with their dance and song. It will be a tour of the bay visiting beaches, mouths, straits, rocks, and islets to witness one of the most surprising experiences for all the senses. Tails, fins, curious eyes, and impressive jumps that will leave you breathless; Listening to their breathing and their song from miles away will make you perceive the grandeur of this species. Cheerful dolphins and playful birds could also add to this unique experience.

The minimum age to participate in this adventure will be 8 years old and in the company of a responsible adult.

During the excursion, a safety distance of at least 60 meters will be maintained between the whales and the boat, special care will be taken not to separate more mothers from their calves and not to change their course, disturbing their environment; therefore, we look forward to your understanding and collaboration.

NIGHT LAB

Night exploration walks, a way to see, feel and vibrate in the dark of the night in a natural environment, an ecosystem surrounded by the force of the ocean and the intensity of the sky, full of magical lights that mix with the sudden movements of curious crustaceans, reptiles and turtles that come to our beaches throughout the year to lay their eggs, as well as insects and countless companions that will allow us to perceive incredible sensory phenomena. Illuminated only by the intensity of the stars in the clear skies of the Pacific.

The group will go out with different objectives, depending on the weather conditions, spawning seasons or mating of the different species that will make their presence there.

For these experiences, depending on the activity, minors will be accepted in the company of a responsible adult.

DURATION: 2 hours.

It will be very important that the participants are aware of the importance of ecosystem conservation.

OBSERVATION / CATALOGING OF BIRDS AND MAMMALS

These excursions are organized depending on the interests of the group since the area and the ecosystems are rich in fauna, generally, it begins with silent navigation on the Cupica River, which allows us to go up its crystal clear waters surrounded by a bustling environment and feverish where the riots of the jungle resound, making visible the innumerable species of birds, mammals, and reptiles native to the area.

DURATION: 2 hours.

DIVING AND SNORKELING

The underwater excursions will be carried out according to the weather and tide conditions. we have multiple areas for diving, snorkeling, and free diving activities. The group will have a boat and equipment for the dives such as life jackets and masks. This experience will give you a new point of view of marine life and the exuberance and richness of our oceans.

To participate in this activity it will be necessary to have knowledge and experience in swimming.

SUSTAINABLE FISHING

In these excursions, the richest fishing waters in the country will be explored, depending on the weather conditions, the tide, the experience and the expectations of our fishermen.

The observatory proposes only the capture of what can be consumed in our facilities so as not to affect the ecosystem or use the capture, documentation, and release modality.

DURATION: to be defined between the participants and Orígenes staff.

INDIGENOUS RESERVATION

In the hills near the Pacific Ocean Observatory there is an indigenous settlement of Embera peoples, holders of thousands of ancestral traditions in crafts and fishing, owners of a vast culture that they share with pleasure and humility with the visitor who crosses their path.

We will travel by boat along the Cupica River, entering the Chocó as the course of the river narrows, we will change to smaller boats to continue the journey and reach the town, there you can enjoy native dishes, exotic fruits of the region, dances, handicrafts, and more.

DURATION: The tours have a time of one hour and fifteen minutes each way, the time of stay in the town will be determined by the expeditionary group and the climatic conditions.

SALTO DE VIRINVI EXPEDITION

A unique expedition to where the Cupica River jumps from the rocky plateau of the Western mountain range in free fall to the continental shelf forming a waterfall of an amazing size, that often drapes the beautiful jungle with great rainbows.

The navigation route along the Cupica River from its mouth in the mighty Pacific takes us back in an artisanal boat, which meets the size requirements to be able to go up the waters of this beautiful river, which after approximately two hours of travel allows the waterfall to be seen in the distance, being revealed by the roar of its waters hitting the earth and irrigating the immensity of the forests.

CACIQUE CHICONCORA EXPEDITION

This beautiful journey takes us through the mouths of the Cacique and Cupica rivers, which at high tide allows us to navigate unexpected places with changing landscapes and paradises that are hidden among these beautiful coasts. Along the route, there are special places for snorkeling and swimming in crystalline waters.

DURATION: 2 hours.

RIVER FLOATING

A different experience is to glide gently on a float or with a lifejacket along the gentle current that takes you to the seashore, crossing crystal clear pools and cheerful torrents camouflaged between bird songs, perhaps a cicada or small schools of fish swirling with the playful streams.

The expedition goes back about 10 kilometers upstream in the boat that will transport and escort you down the river.

DURATION: To be defined between the participants and the Orígenes staff.

SEASIDE HORSERIDE

This expedition will be carried out on horseback, at low tide in such a way that some of the 24 kilometers covered by this beach with a width of 400 meters in some parts can be covered.

We will travel to the east to pass the lower mouth of the Cupica River towards the mouth of the Cacique River, there we will go up until we reach sweet and crystalline wells, where the group will take advantage of diving into the crystal clear water and we will return through the foothills of Chocó until we reach the urban area. from Cupica Bay, there will be time to socialize in the town and we will return by boat to Origenes Eco Hotel.

The excursions will have the supervision and accompaniment of the qualified personnel of the Pacific Ocean Observatory, Orígenes Eco Refugio and under strict compliance with the safety regulations for visitors as well as for the work team and especially for the environment.

HIKING AND NIGHT WALKS

The observatory will provide guides, routes, and equipment for those who enjoy this beautiful discipline that, accompanied by binoculars and photographic equipment, are truly spiritually stimulating.

Night walks in this area are extrasensory experiences.

STAR GAZING

By the warmth of a bonfire, you can enjoy the amazing firmament of Cupica Bay, where we have installed a small telescope with which you can observe the solar system, planets, satellites, and constellations in an environment conducive to learning and enjoying a little of this vast universe.
